Harvest time is upon us. Summer’s final days are here and the bounty to fill the Cornucopia is rolling in. As we know, for our BC vintners, this year’s harvest season is bittersweet, with some lucky wineries reporting 25-30% of their usual crop, with so many others not so lucky. I’m pulling in a strong crop of tomatoes, peppers, and tons of other vegetables in my backyard garden (farm), as are my farmer neighbours up in Pemberton. Our Whistler restaurants are starting up their fall specials and celebrating the bounty of this local harvest and delicious BC and global wines to go with these menus.
While working on this year’s Cornucopia drink seminars, and picking buckets of tomatoes, I reminded myself that I didn’t drink enough rose this summer. The great news is it is never too late to enjoy rose – it just may be time for a style shift. Those glorious, scorching hot summer days called for a pale, bone dry ‘provencal’ style of rose, very cold, for pure refreshment, perhaps with a cool salad for afternoon lunch. Now that the sun has lowered, and menus are heartier, it’s time to open some slightly richer roses. Darker colour comes from longer skin contact, and adds flavour and some tannin even to match with richer food. There is something pink to pair with almost any harvest food and any occasion.
Though we don’t have a rose specific seminar on schedule, you can be sure that many of our presenters will be including this versatile wine in their seminars, including my own. You will also see many at our Signature events, including the West Coast House Party, Crush Gala, and more. I’ll be opening a great bottle of BC rose this week to inspire me, perhaps from Quails’ Gate, Fort Berens, or Unsworth, and hope that you will be inspired too to join us in discovering a world of fantastic wine and other beverages in our seminars this year. There is truly something for everyone! And please don’t delay in getting your tickets, several have limited seats remaining.
Whistler’s food and beverage sector take centre stage at this time of year, invigorating our village with culinary delights world renown. At the Whistler Institute, this time of year is when we launch our season of thought-provoking speaker events – and in November, one will take place in partnership with Cornucopia Whistler to facilitate a crucial conversation about the future of Okanagan wine.
The title of the event, “Mother Nature Always Has the Last Bat,” is a poignant reminder that, despite human innovation and technology, nature ultimately dictates growing terms. Speakers Decoa and Jeff Harder, who successfully created and built Ex Nihilio Winery in the Okanagan Valley, are no strangers to the realities of climate change. An endeavour that lasted 20 years, they will share their experiences and insights based on what they witnessed firsthand from the fields to industry supply and demand.
Whistler Cornucopia has always been about celebrating the best of food and drink, and about sampling farm-fresh ingredients to innovative beverages. This event is a natural extension of that celebration and exploratory mindset, reminding us that being amenable opens us to new opportunities.
Join us at the Rainbow Theatre Friday, November 8 at 6pm for an engaging conversation that will broaden your horizons when it comes to wine varietals. Tickets can be purchased individually, or in combination with Cellar Door, where we can continue the conversation while sipping and savouring from over 25 wineries.
The Whistler Institute seeks partnerships that elevate learning opportunities and influence change. We are honoured to be partnering with Whistler Cornucopia this year to host a conversation that, we believe, will augment the first Friday night of the festival through inspiring dialogue with leading industry experts.
Let’s come together to ensure that we, and future generations, can continue to enjoy the bounties of Mother Nature.
Cheers to influencing changes and inspiring minds,
Mandy Rousseau
Executive Director of the Whistler Institute
Hello Cornucopia Enthusiasts,
As we gear up for this year’s festival, I couldn’t be more excited to share with you the incredible lineup we have in store. Cornucopia has always been a celebration of the very best in food and beverages, and this year is no exception. We’ve got a mix of fresh, new events and familiar favourites that have become staples over the years.
One of the things that make Cornucopia so special is the talent it attracts. This year, we’re thrilled to welcome celebrated chefs and beverage experts to our stages. These beverage & culinary masters will be showcasing their skills, sharing their knowledge, and, of course, serving up some unforgettable experiences.
I’m particularly excited about the return of Samantha Rahn, a name that has become synonymous for industry insiders with Cornucopia for well over a decade. Samantha, one of British Columbia’s most renowned and award-winning sommeliers, has been an ambassador for Cornucopia for many years, and her passion and expertise have been a huge part of our success. This year, Samantha joins the Watermark team in a larger role, where she’ll be curating our beverage seminars and making her presence felt on the culinary stages. Her involvement is sure to elevate the festival to new heights, and I can’t wait for you to see what she has in store.
Of course, none of this would be possible without the incredible leadership of our Event Director, Justina Armstrong. Justina is back for her tenth year at the helm, and her dedication to ensuring world-class execution is unmatched. Her experience and vision have been instrumental in making Cornucopia the event it is today. Under her guidance, our team has been working tirelessly to create an experience that is not only memorable but truly world-class.
What’s new this year? Well, without giving too much away, let me just say that we’ve added some innovative new events and twists that I think you’re going to love. From intimate dinners at Whistler’s internationally acclaimed restaurants to seminars that will let you get up close and personal with the best in the business, this year’s festival promises to be more entertaining and engaging than ever before. And don’t worry, our perennial sellout events are back too, so if you have a favourite, make sure you grab your tickets early!
Cornucopia is all about celebrating the finest in food and drink, and this year we’re pulling out all the stops to make sure it’s an experience you won’t forget. Whether you’re a seasoned festival-goer or a first-time attendee, there’s something for everyone.
So, mark your calendars, gather your friends, and get ready to indulge in the ultimate celebration of food and drink. I can’t wait to see you there!
Cheers,
Sue
