Ollie Powrie joined Villa Maria Estate as the Company Viticulturist in 2007. He currently oversees fruit supply from over 2000 hectares of producing vineyards in Marlborough, Hawkes Bay, Gisborne and Auckland. Although he heads a team of Regional Viticulturists, Vineyard Managers and Grower Liaison Officers, he personally visits several wine regions in a week.
By contrast, Ollie’s first job in viticulture was much less expansive: after earning BSc in Ecology (1996) and a Bachelor of Viticulture (2002), he began his career managing a total of 60 hectares of in the Gimblett Gravels region. In 2003 he decided to broaden his skills and experience by accepting a position with a producer in the Rhone Valley, France. The role was multifaceted, with both vineyard and winery responsibilities in regions including the Languedoc and Chateauneuf du Pape.
Ollie’s experiences in France continue to influence his view of viticulture as he works with Villa Maria in New Zealand. By his own admission, he’s obsessed with wine quality, and he sees a hugely exciting time ahead for Villa Maria. He’s passionate about growing grapes in the most sustainable way that enhances the land and local environment.
Ollie, his wife Rebecca, and daughters Sophia and India live in sunny Napier, Hawkes Bay.
